One of my all time favourite quotes is:
“Wake up early. Drink coffee. Work hard. Be ambitious. Keep your priorities straight, your mind right and your head up. Do well, live well and dress really well. Do what you love, love what you do. It is time to start living.”
I take this quote literally, everything in this quote is a depiction of me and my lifestyle. Every morning I wake up early by choice! I have lemon + chia water, then a shot of apple cider vinegar, I will have a little something to eat and off to hot yoga I go. That’s at about 6:00am. Yoga starts at 6:30 and that is a great start to the day. I always take the time out to hydrate myself after yoga, but what comes next is what I reward myself with.
I can honestly say I go to bed excited to wake up and make my morning coffee (my mom used to always remind me of how excited she would get for her coffee and now I inherited this).
Something that I have learned to do is to slow down, be grateful, and make all of the little things count. I don’t hit snooze, miss time to make breakfast and grab a generic coffee. I make time for myself from the moment I wake up to when I go to sleep. For me coffee is bliss. It is important and I love it.
As a Holistic Nutritionist I am constantly hearing conflicting information about coffee. Part of my job is debunking nutrition myths and trends. If you are enjoying free trade organic coffee beans, drinking water throughout your day, and most importantly not adding tons of artificial sweeteners, cream, or milk, coffee can be quite nutritious.
Now for the best part, what I put in my coffee. You can use any beans that you like, you can grind your own fresh beans, you can even use instant (as long as it is 100% coffee). I would be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy instant from time to time, it takes me back to my travels.
I brew my cup of coffee and take in the aromas. The smell can be just as comforting and warming as the taste. Then I add:
- 1 tbsp organic Coconut Oil
- 1 tbsp Almond Butter
- 1 tsp of 100% pure Maple Syrup (I AM CANADIAN!) or organic raw honey
- 2 drops of organic pure Vanilla extract
.. and blend.
This shouldn’t take more than one or two minutes to prepare, and you are worth it!
Notice how all of the ingredients are healthy and organic? No dairy and no artificial sweeteners, no need when you have the good stuff! It looks like a cappuccino but tastes incredible, is guilt free, frothy, and packed with energy. It is also highly nutritious, and here’s why:
Coconut oil is a tropical dream. It improves digestion and increases the absorption of vitamins, amino acids and minerals. It boosts energy and endurance, kills bacteria, is great for your skin, cholesterol, thyroid & enzyme function, lowers blood pressure and most importantly tastes amazing in my coffee!
Almonds are the most nutritionally dense of all nuts. Meaning that for every calorie that you consume, you get more vitamins and minerals than from any other nut. They are packed with protein and are a fantastic source of fibre, excellent for digestion and a great source of Vitamin E.
Now for the sweet stuff. Maple Syrup contains antioxidants that extinguish inflammation, the darker the grade the higher in nutrients and antioxidants! Make sure it is 100% pure organic grade B maple syrup, if possible! Real maple syrup is an excellent source of manganese , which helps repair muscle and cell damage, and stabilizes your blood sugar levels. Packed with nutrients, maple syrup contains essential nutrients like calcium, zinc, potassium, iron and the list goes on! I was at a friends place over the holidays and the syrup at the table contained NO maple syrup, not a trace of it, so be careful of impersonators. READ LABELS!
I always make sure to choose a mug that I love and take in the incredible aroma as I pour. I will usually sit at my desk and take out a few minutes for myself, just for me where I can really just relax and think. I may even light my favourite candle and read a book (OK I’ll probably be on Instagram, but sue me!)
The point is this is a great way to take some time for yourself and to start your day off right. Back to the Quote. After your coffee you can then “Work hard. Be ambitious.
